ELEMENTARY (TV Review)

CBS is not even attempting to make the Sherlock Holmes story fresh: that is not the point. All they are trying to do is to use the Sherlock Holmes brand, cynically, to make us interested in yet another formulaic, cookie-cutter crime drama. Continue reading

DOCTOR WHO S07E04 “The Power of Three”

At this point in the season—with only one episode left before the hiatus, and only one more week before the Parting of the Ponds—an entry like “The Power of Three” represents a wasted opportunity on an epic scale. Continue reading

DOCTOR WHO S07E03 “A Town Called Mercy”

“A Town Called Mercy” is an excellent reminder that it is possible to use the tropes of genre adventure to explore fairly complex ethical dilemmas. In fact, that’s one of the things that Doctor Who does best. Continue reading

DOCTOR WHO S07E02 “Dinosaurs on a Spaceship”

If “Dinosaurs on a Spaceship” turns out to be the weakest episode of Series 7, we can count ourselves lucky—parts of it were tremendous fun, and it had just enough substance to save it from total irrelevancy—but it is both overstuffed and undercooked. Continue reading

Welcome back to our continuing coverage of Doctor Who. I’ll be reviewing every episode of Series 7, the first five of which will air Saturday evenings at 9/8c throughout September on BBC America. (My goal is to post each review … Continue reading

THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN (2011)

The Adventures of Tintin—though an undeniably impressive technical achievement—is never quite as much fun as it should be…The result is a gorgeous, frenetic adventure that children might enjoy, and animation aficionados might admire, but which no one will ever really love. Continue reading

DOCTOR WHO – 2011 Christmas Special “The Doctor, the Widow, and the Wardrobe”

It was The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, with a touch of A Wrinkle in Time, and just a hint of Aliens at the end. It was charming, and funny, and a wonderful way for families to spend an hour in front of the television on Christmas Night. It just wasn’t very Doctor Who. Continue reading

DOCTOR WHO S06E12 “Closing Time”

“Closing Time,” written by Gareth Roberts as a sequel to his 2010 story “The Lodger,” gives us a welcome breather between the emotional sturm und drang of the previous two entries and next week’s grand finale. More than that, however, the episode provides a turning point for the season: instead of piling still more guilt on the Doctor, Moffat and Co. begin to shake off the cumulative darkness of the previous few episodes, and start moving us back towards a more joyous, edifying vision of the Doctor we know and love. Continue reading

DOCTOR WHO S06E11 “The God Complex”

This is the Doctor’s fear: the people he likes that he cannot save; the people he loves but can’t protect; the confrontation with his own limitations; the reminder that he is better off alone. Continue reading

DOCTOR WHO S06E10 “The Girl Who Waited”

Make no mistake, “The Girl Who Waited” is essential Doctor Who, and its themes echo and ripple throughout the past and future of this entire franchise in dark and troubling ways. Continue reading

DOCTOR WHO S06E09 “Night Terrors”

We might recognize “Night Terrors” as something of a low-budget filler episode, but I have a feeling that the young children who watched it on Saturday night from behind their sofas may remember it as an absolute classic: an episode that scared them, and comforted them, and told them exactly what they needed to hear. Continue reading

DOCTOR WHO S06E06 “The Almost People”
Since Episode Two I had been bracing myself for the discovery that this whole season was either an alternate reality or a dream, either of which I would have hated. But this is so much better: a huge twist that somehow doesn’t invalidate what has come before. Continue reading

DOCTOR WHO S06E01–2 “The Impossible Astronaut” & “Day of the Moon”

Last year’s Doctor Who season opener, “The Eleventh Hour,” was—by coincidence and design—a good jumping-on point for the series. With this year’s season opener, on the other hand, Moffat seems to have different goals entirely, and “safe” is nowhere on the agenda. Continue reading

DOCTOR WHO An Introduction

I doubt anyone involved in the creation of Doctor Who would have predicted that the show would be thriving well into the new millennium, but—whether by accident or intention—there’s no denying that they built this show to last. Continue reading
