Hi there
Thanks for the response.
I will also watch it again, and yes, perhaps the hope of some life with his wife (holding the captured bird close to his heart) was enough... Making it have a happier ending by implying life after death, does seem a bit out of character.
Wonderful movie though.

SPOILERS AHEAD: Mark, I clearly need to watch it again, because I didn't find the ending as ambiguous as others have. I thought it was clear that he dies, after laying down in that adjoining room: he gets up and meets Anne in the kitchen immediately after. (That he was in the other room explains why we don't see the police find his body in the opening scene.)

It's that scene—the "reunited in the afterlife" scene—that undermines the unsentimental clarity of the rest of the movie for me, just a little bit: I can't decide if the movie would have been stronger without that.

Lovely film, just watched it, fantastic performances and deeply touching.
But what happens to the old man, if he died, where was his body, if he lives, where is he?
Did he "leave the building" with her, take his life?
I found that unnecessarily oblique and NOT honest, candid, frank, direct, unflinching.
