I didn't care for it as much as you did (I'm a long-time fan of Battle Royale), but I love yr review. Just the warnings alone, in the first paragraphs, about the perils of watching ANY of the Twilight movies probably saved my marriage. If I had a marriage. Thanks.

Although I knew going in that the film's critical and popular response had been overwhelmingly positive, like you, I was basically expecting something unexceptional -- only to be pleasantly surprised. I agree with you 100% that "The Hunger Games" is very intelligent, well-executed (no double entendre intended), provocative sci-fi.

Hi UC,

Thanks for that well-written, even handed review. (I'm so glad that I stumbled across your website.) I hope your girlfriend, N., enjoyed the movie as much as you did.

That's my plan. I was thinking how nice it would be to enjoy one of these franchises without knowing what was going to happen next, and without always comparing it (usually unfavorably) to the book. (I'm already regretting reading all the George R. R. Martin books before Game of Thrones comes back.)

But I also have poor impulse control, so...

Sooo... your plan is to read the first one and not pick up the second until after the next movie comes out?

Good luck with that. I picked the first one off Jay's shelf a while ago, secure in the knowledge that the rest of the series was sitting there if I it was any good. Imagine my cries of anguish after I flew through Book 1 and raced to the shelf, only to find he had #3 but not #2....

Of course the book is better, and you're right Rue hits in the movie but demolishes in the book, but I was nervous going in and the movie gets it right. Jay and I just came back from a viewing very relieved.
