I hate to be a downer but I thought HUGO was overwhelming to a fault. The main storyline of the orphan boy never resonated emotionally for me. The best part of the film in which Scorsese explores the birth of cinema is stunning and involving. He would have been better to have just made a movie about that subject.

Obviously there is great technical artistry in HUGO and I credit it for that. However the 3d, the CGI, and the stories within the stories left me with a headache. There is something to be said for simplicity.

I saw Hugo this past weekend with the family. Everyone loved it. My 9 y/o's teacher read the book to his class earlier in the school year and he was adamant that we should see the movie. He was right.

There are several movies on this list I'd LIKE to see, but I've only actually seen TWO, most recently "Meek's Cutoff." First off, I really like The West. I love the mythology of it and the scenery. What I liked most about "Meek's Cutoff" were the costumes and set pieces. Not so crazy about the story. I felt like, "You guys fucked up and follwed this Meek dude, and here we all are in the middle of eastern Oregon (MAYBE)." The most enlightened of the adult males (the father figure?) didn't seem like he'd be the sort to take shortcuts OR follow shaggy mountain men who sleep late. I thought this was good, but I didn't really want to be in the desert with those guys anymore. A lot of squeeking wagon wheels.
