I must agree with N here:

"You know, I have to say, I don’t get the adoration for this movie. I’m not feeling the love. My hills aren’t alive."

I've probably only seen this in its entirety twice in my life (and been in a high school production), but I feel like I've been subjected to it 20 times or more.

Doesn't help that they repeat all of the songs so much (I am NOT a fan of Rodgers or Hammerstein). It feels like it's about 12 hours long. And God help you if it's being run on network TV, so they can extend it by sticking in commercials.

-- As a result, I probably have as thorough a grounding in musical theater as any other heterosexual man in America --

Um, yeah . . . "as much of a grounding in musical theater as any other heterosexual man in America?"

LOL. The average hetero American male has ZERO grounding in musical theater.

It's funny because I know most of these tunes through either playing in the orchestra pit or playing some Rodgers & Hammerstein in the big band, but honest to God, 98% of the heteros I might meet on the street have never even heard a show tune.

That being said, as straight as I am, I freakin' love The Sound of Music, you want to see a straight man get some tears in his eyes, pop in that DVD, because it is so beautiful. I'm sure N. is very beautiful, but there is something very wrong with someone who can watch that movie and not get swept away with the songs, they are like magic.

Thanks, Greg. I keep worrying that N. will like one of these movies, and then I'll be at a loss for what to write. (So far, thankfully, it hasn't been a problem.)

I appreciate the manly support, Dan. It's tough growing up as the kid who knows that Cornelius in Planet of the Apes was also the original Mordred in Camelot.

But I've learned to be comfortable with my musical theater expertise. I even watch Glee and everything. (Or I did, before it started sucking so badly.)

Wow, I'd forgotten there even was a Logan's Run TV show, and probably never knew that was Louisa. How strange that three of the kids (at least) ended up in such geeky/sci-fi shows. (Spider-Man, Logan's Run, Lost in Space). I should look them all up; the others were probably on Space: 1999 or Land of the Lost or something.

N. has only seen one David Lynch movie, and it freaked her out, so it's hard to predict how this one is going to go. It could be traumatic, but it should be a good palette cleanser after The Sound of Music.

UC, I know you're reasonably secure with your youth of musical theatre, but I just want to (ever-so-sheepishly) have your back on this.

I too grew up in a house that had every musical LP known to man. Didn't have anything by the Rolling Stones, but we had..."Guys and Dolls," "Man of La Mancha," "Oklahoma," "Hair," "Funny Girl," "Damn Yankees," "Kiss Me, Kate," "My Fair Lady," and "South Pacific." I shouldn't REALLY know who Ezio Pinza is, but I do. And based on her 1960s album photos, I thought Barbra Streisand was fairly hot.

My testicles haven't completely shriveled away.

I think I like your girlfriend. I never cared for the Sound of Music, either. Of the Von Trapp children, my favorite was Louisa (Heather Menzies) who later played Jessica in the TV version of Logan's Run.

If N fails to like Blue Velvet, however, I take back what I said about liking her. :P
