One of the best reviews I've seen of GoT though I have to disagree with the faux-archaic language bit. Other than the occasional bits like Ned reciting the death sentence for the deserter in Ep1, I thought the language was surprisingly naturalistic given the genre.

Robert and Ned do speak archaicly briefly in the crypt when Robert says "I would name you the hand of the king" but that seems clearly a ceremonial form of words which goes with such an offer and is immediately undercut by "I want you to run my kingdom while I eat, drink and whore myself into an early grave."

You ARE getting this mixed up with Sesame Street? That's a scarily accurate thumbnail portrait of Elmo.

That's a little unfair. I mean you could say the same thing about Sesame Street.

Dan, I'm liking Game of Thrones more and more: to me, the first episode was also the weakest, but it's turning out to have far more in common with Deadwood than Lord of the Rings.

Deadwood, by the way, is one of my all-time favorite shows. I'm actually thinking about going back and reviewing that series from the start, just because I'd love to write about it.

I watched the first episode through the fuzz of our partly-blocked basic cable TV package connection. I didn't have high hopes, but Nancy and I have been addicted to many other HBO series' during, what I believe to be a Renaissance of programming material (The Sopranos, Deadwood, The Wire, Sex and the City, Six Feet Under). We watched the ENTIRE final season of Deadwood in one marathon stretch. I know. Congratulations.
However, I don't think I'm going to get sucked into Game of Thrones (at least not YET). I had the impression (based on one episode) of too many fantasy, Dark-Age cliches. Peter Dinklage as the dwarf was the only character I semi-cared for. Plus, I just discovered the new Battlestar Gallactica, and I've got somewhere around 4 years of shows to watch.

Spot on. I never expected to like this series - didn't even plan to watch it.
